Lets start with POA's Power of Attorney's. POA's are just as important as a Will if not more so and for any age, a POA is not just for the elderly. If you make that all important Will and you die then the Will ensures that your assets go to the right beneficiaries. If you lose your faculties, or you lose your ability to look after yourself mentally, then the question raised would be, "what happens to your care" "what happens to your finances" "what happens to your living arrangement, your home", who will look after your pets, the list is endless as to why we should have a POA in place?
Its a well known fact that the leading cause of death in England & Wales in 2023 was Dementia and Alzheimers Disease, with 66,876 deaths registered In the UK, around 70,800 people are living with young on-set dementia, which is when symptoms develop before the age of 65. Another statistic is telling us that every 90 seconds someone is admitted to hospital with a brain injury because of a road traffic accident, or a contact-sport accident some of these being a big example of what can go wrong. Therefore to get your affairs in order so that you are covered should an eventuality occur, then a POA is your answer.
More to the point WHY should you update your Will? It is very easy to put this to the back of your mind. However life events occur that may require you to reflect & make some changes to your existing Will, otherwise it may not be reflecting your new circumstances. You should review your Will every five years and or after any major life changes:
- Getting Married, Divorced or Separated
- Having a Child or Grandchild
- Moving House
- If the executer or beneficiary named in the Will dies
- If you have trusts that are no longer working for you written into your Will or your Asset Values go up or down
- If you have received a large inheritance, then you should review your Will to ensure it passes your estate onto your loved ones in the most tax efficient way
If you have had any of the above changes since you had your Will written, now is the time to change it or update it!
